Dumbest Quote of the Year Makes Wikipedia

You know there's a lot of competition for the stupidest thing said in a given year, and 2009 and 2010 have been especially ripe with dumb comments.  But this has to be a contender for the 2010 competition and for now, it's the odds-on favorite.

From senior Iranian cleric, Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi, the following pronouncement;
"Many women who do not dress modestly... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes."
How does he know?  Apparently he talks to Allah.
"A divine authority told me to tell the people to make a general repentance. Why? Because calamities threaten us."
The first comment is quite likely the pinnacle of dumb.  Unless of course the second comment is true, which makes Allah the merciful a little circumspect.  He's wiping out cities because of how women dress? C'mon, don't you think that's a little suspect? Even in Iran people probably aren't buying that line of thought in great numbers. Let me add, I'm not indiscriminately impugning Islam here.  I'm impugning this foolishness with which Sedighi connects the unconnectable dots.

Interestingly,  a comparison with state Senator (and Republican) Hank Irwin has already been added to Wikipedia! News, to opinion to the Wikipedia information in hours.  Glad that Wiki content is so reliable...

  1. Yes, I agree. You cannot lead anyone where they don't want to go. We may call those who can be led in such manner 'a willing victim'. ;O)
