Thursday Hillary Bash - Keep Stepping in Emailgate

Hillary Clinton is digging her hole deeper each time she talks about the email scandal.  Emailgate is not going to go away just because she announces her next run for the presidency.

Bzzzz. Wrong, try again.

A stopped clock...

It looks like even Obama can get it right on Venezuela (after 6 years).  Even a stopped clock is right twice a day:
The United States on Monday declared Venezuela a national security threat and ordered sanctions against seven officials from the oil-rich country in the worst bilateral diplomatic dispute since socialist President Nicolas Maduro took office in 2013.

U.S. President Barack Obama issued and signed the executive order...the move stokes tensions between Washington and Caracas just as U.S. relations with Cuba, a longtime U.S. foe in Latin America and key ally to Venezuela, are set to be normalized.

Declaring any country a threat to national security is the first step in starting a U.S. sanctions program...

"Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of U.S. financial systems," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement.

"We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government's efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela's problems cannot be solved by criminalizing dissent," he added.
Thanks Obama, for finally getting one right.  You're closing in on the win record of the stopped clock.

Thursday Hillary Bash - flaunting email rules

I've long since given up on trying to comment on every Hillary Clinton scandal because there are just too many.  I'm just interested now in documenting them and even with that I cannot always keep up. But sidestepping email rules as Secretary of State is worth mentioning. She feels clearly that she is accountable to no one.

Via the NYT:
WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton exclusively used a personal email account to conduct government business as secretary of state, State Department officials said, and may have violated federal requirements that officials’ correspondence be retained as part of the agency’s record.

Mrs. Clinton did not have a government email address during her four-year tenure at the State Department. Her aides took no actions to have her personal emails preserved on department servers at the time, as required by the Federal Records Act.

It was only two months ago, in response to a new State Department effort to comply with federal record-keeping practices, that Mrs. Clinton’s advisers reviewed tens of thousands of pages of her personal emails and decided which ones to turn over to the State Department. All told, 55,000 pages of emails were given to the department. Mrs. Clinton stepped down from the secretary’s post in early 2013.

Her expansive use of the private account was alarming to current and former National Archives and Records Administration officials and government watchdogs, who called it a serious breach.

A scary Chinese fiscal cliff

The impact of a Chinese economic downturn (a stark Telegraph article worth reading in its entirety) would have implications in Europe and on the now building recovery in the U.S.

How likely is a Chinese fiscal cliff being hit?  It seems more and more so each day.  Everything from American oil production to offshore labor throughout Asia, to the fate of the E.U. could be impacted, because the timing is about the worst it could possibly be for economies elsewhere.

Netenyahu's speech to Congress

Yesterday, Prime Minister Netenyahu made a great speech at AIPAC (the unfiltered speech is here).  Today he followed up with another one to Congress:

Scott Walker getting it on immigration?

Scott Walker, possible presidential candidate, says he has changed his mind on immigration.  Let me be clear - I think Walker would make an excellent president, but this just seems like straightforward primary positioning.  He's doing what he needs to do if he wants a better chance to win in the primaries. That's what he gets. Is it really possible he's changed his mind? Of course it is, but it would not be my first guess as to why he made those statements.

One additional note, this does a terrific job of changing the conversation from the faux Rudy Giuliani controversy.
