Canada (kinda) has a new leader
The governing Liberal party has elected a successor to Justin Trudeau; it's Mark Carney. Mark Carney does not have a seat in parliament. So technically....
It's also worth noting that the Liberal Party disqualified two thirds of the ballots cast during their leadership race. I know it's not quite the same as the Democratic Party in the U.S. that disqualified every vote from their 2024 primaries, but you have to factor in the exchange rate.
So who is Mark Carney? Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre put it best in this video:

I'm less optimistic about this
In Canada, there's a looming post-Trudeau election. But I'm less optimistic that it will happen before the October deadline. The socialist NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh has indicated he would continue to support the Liberal party's new leader (likely Justin Trudeau policy clone, Mark Carney). Why? He has his pension locked in now. Well, his party has collapsed in the polls as a Liberal alternative now that the party has ditched Trudeau and someone else is taking his place (once again, likely Justin Trudeau policy clone, Mark Carney). He won't be so eager to tank his party or his legacy given that circumstance. And given that, it's looks like they'll just run out the clock. The irony of that, is that it's more likely to help the Liberal party than the NDP.
Nevertheless, there are those who think the election will be in April. I'm less optimistic than this:

10 Hard Truths For Liberals - From A Liberal
I came across this video of a liberal discussing why the left has started to lose the cultural and political battles to the right. A lot of this is correct. The good news is for conservatives most on the left don't want to hear this.

Google founder Larry Page skirting the system on health care
About a year ago Google co-founders Larry Page Sergey Brin stepped down as leaders of Google and Alphabet. Page, who has supported many liberal causes, appears to be taking advantage of the perks of wealth and is being less egalitarian when it comes to the health of his family.
According to Market Realist:
While Larry Page may not be a registered member of either the Democratic or Republican party, he has given money to Democratic candidates' campaigns. His political donations suggest that he is more liberal. Page has donated to campaigns that support same-sex marriage. He has also supported ballot measures on alternative energy....Google doesn’t hire staff based on their political affiliation. However, if political campaign donations by staff members are anything to go by, Google is still heavily liberal. For the 2020 election cycle, 88 percent of Google staff donated to Democrat candidates compared to 12 percent who donated to GOP candidates, according to the OpenSecrets website.Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren received particularly strong financial support from Google staff for their presidential bids. Interestingly, Google continued to donate to Warren despite her proposal to break up the company and other big tech companies to curb their influence.
But in recent news, it appears Larry Page was granted special treatment in New Zealand when health care was required. According to Stuff, Page is considered a New Zealand resident under some questionable conditions related to the health of his son. It seems that where his family's health is concerned, the liberal Page, is willing to use his wealth in ways that might shock progressives:
Kiwi businessman and philanthropist Sir Stephen Tindall, who knows Page personally, confirmed Page visited New Zealand because his young child required hospital treatment in Auckland.Page, who is reportedly spending the Covid-19 pandemic in Fiji, has since left New Zealand, Tindall said.Meanwhile, it was revealed in Parliament on Thursday afternoon that Page and his child were evacuated to New Zealand aboard a Kiwi air ambulance. The billionaire went into isolation on arrival, while his child was treated at Starship.
The article noted that billionaire Larry Page applied for a $10 million investor visa three months before he went into managed isolation at an Auckland hotel, while his child was treated in hospital. I wonder if Bernie Sanders would approve of this? That's rhetorical, publicly Bernie would pitch a fit but privately he would likely be fine with it because Bernie's a typical two tier socialist, just like Page; socialism for thee, special status for me.

Liberals abandoning Manchin maybe?
![]() |
| political winds follower. |
...Manchin’s vote should call old party strategies into question. If the Democratic Party can’t count on its own senators for votes as morally pivotal as the Kavanaugh confirmation, its big tent might just be too big. Its tolerance for conservative members might not be as pragmatic as it appears, either. Since Trump took office in 2016, a number of Democrats to Manchin’s left have performed surprisingly well in so-called red states, winning some unexpected primary elections and polling well against Republican candidates....Manchin himself faced a primary challenge from the left. He won, decisively, but Paula Jean Swearengin’s final showing against the senator bears re-examination. For Swearengin, an environmental activist with no name recognition and no campaign budget to speak of, to earn 30 percent of the vote against Manchin, who has served as senator since 2010 and was governor before that, indicates that progressive opposition to the senator is hardly nonexistent. After all, this is the same state where Bernie Sanders handily trounced the more centrist Hillary Clinton in 2016’s Democratic primary.Democrats are clearly stuck with Manchin for now. The senator’s reelection seems like a sure bet, and the same can’t be said for every progressive candidate running in 2018. The real question, though, isn’t whether the party should shun him today, but whether it should continue to settle for conservatives with uncertain loyalties — and the party arguably can’t answer that until it figures out what it wants to be. All its efforts to brand itself a party of the people, from the Better Deal platform to its emerging tolerance for left-wing policies like Medicare for All, look like pandering as long as it allows conservatives like Manchin into the fold. The necessity of right-leaning, red-state Democrats might not be good strategy, but rather a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Happening Now: Conservative vs Liberal vs Socialist in Ontario
All that, said I expect our mini-Trump to win a majority government in provincial parliament as his votes are not so concentrated as the NDPs which will solidly over-perform in some areas, just as Hillary Clinton did in California, which did not help her one bit either. Conservatives deserve to win because they are offering common sense. They are listening to voters.
I'll report tomorrow on how it turned out.

Knee jerk liberals versus Harvey Weinstein.
Embattled film mogul Harvey Weinstein — a once-dominant force in the Academy Awards who rewrote the rules of Oscar campaigning — has been expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in response to mounting allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him.The film academy’s 54-member board of governors, which includes such industry luminaries as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Kathleen Kennedy and Whoopi Goldberg, voted in an emergency meeting on Saturday morning to remove Weinstein from the organization’s ranks in an unprecedented public rebuke of a prominent industry figure. The move marked the latest blow in Weinstein’s stunning downfall and, in symbolic terms, amounts to a virtual expulsion from Hollywood itself.

| Ad hominem ,ad absurdum. |
...Trump's supporters are loyal. What is one to make of this? There are two main theories of Trump's support. One is that a large minority of Americans -- 40 percent, give or take -- are racist idiots. This theory is at least tacitly endorsed by the Democratic Party and the mainstream liberal media. The other is that a large majority of this large minority are good citizens with intelligible and legitimate opinions, who so resent being regarded as racist idiots that they'll back Trump almost regardless. They may not admire the man, but he's on their side, he vents their frustration, he afflicts the people who think so little of them -- and that's good enough. It's disappointing that Charlottesville hasn't changed their minds -- but then it hasn't changed my mind either. I still think the first theory is absurd and the second theory basically correct.
Trump is routinely accused of being authoritarian and anti-democratic, despite the fact that he won the election and, so far, has been checked at every point and has achieved almost nothing in policy terms. (He might wish he were an authoritarian, but he sure hasn't been allowed to function as one.) Many of his critics, on the other hand, are anti-democratic in a deeper sense: They appear to believe that a little less than half the country doesn't deserve the vote. The second theory -- the correct theory -- is a terrible indictment of the Democratic Party and much of the media. Why aren't the intelligible and legitimate opinions of that large minority given a hearing? Why must their views be bundled reflexively into packages labelled "bigotry" and "stupidity"? Why can't this large minority of the American people be accorded something other than pity or scorn?
Deeming somebody's opinions illegitimate should be a last resort, not a first resort. Refusing to engage, except to mock and condescend, is both anti-democratic and tactically counterproductive. Proof of that last point is the dispiriting tenacity of Trump's support.
