Trump didn't destroy Trudeau's career

Let's get a few things straight here.  First and foremost president Trump (what an awesome feeling to be able to say that in the present tense) did not cause Justin Trudeau's resignation, unlike what a lot of Americans are saying. I'll explain more in a minute.  Secondly, as much as I'd personally be tickled pink with it, Canada is not becoming the 51st state at least not any time soon.

Trump didn't destroy Trudeau's reign in Canada, Trudeau managed that all on his own. He was destined to be absolutely destroyed in the next election in October 2025 and he accomplished that all on his own. His polling has been abysmal for about two years now. His coalition government was already falling apart too, and he may not have made it to October anyway. 

However, it's certainly fair to say that president (elect) Trump helped accelerate the downfall. Many, many Canadians can appreciate him for that. Some of us will appreciate him for a lot more.

As far as Canada becoming the 51st state, I understand that it's just very effective trolling but not only shouldn't it be taken seriously, there are a few reasons it's likely impossible.  Firstly, while a lot of Canadians would be thrilled at that, far more Canadians want Canada to be Canada; even the ones who like Trump and love the U.S. 

Secondly, if there is a 51st state wouldn't it be Greenland? It's more likely Greenland, should it be actually on the table, would become a protectorate and not a state. But if we are talking states, that's more likely a primary objective than Canada. Then there's Panama. Strategically Canada is less important than either of those other two. If anything, Canada seems more like the 52nd state. Or maybe even joined to Alaska as part of the 50th state instead. That's all geographical semantics though.

Thirdly, Canada is so geographically vast, it would require more than just one state. It also makes sense to break that up; Alberta for example is reliably conservative and basically Texas north. Do you as a conservative American want to add a single state that has enough population to gain approximately 50 electoral college votes and tends to lean left? It would make more sense do break that up.  While the mood in Canada is currently pro-conservative, that is not universally true. A split Canada into multiple states is definitely more balanced electorally.

All that aside, Trump's handling of Trudeau has been masterful, purposeful and did help achieve it's intended effect. My greatest hope as  a Canadian, is that Pierre Poilievre is elected as soon as possible and he and Trump develop a terrific working relationship. They are predominantly aligned on political philosophy and an economic union could be something that works out even better than a 51st state.

Now that he cannot be out of his lifetime pension, Canada's socialist NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh has indicated that as soon as parliament reconvenes in late January, he will push a non-confidence motion to topple the Trudeau liberal government he has been supporting overtly (and more recently covertly) for years. With that confirmed, Trudeau will face an election as early as the first week of March, not making it to his mandated deadline of October.

Trudeau might resign and not face the sting of a likely massive defeat at the hands of Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party, leaving that to his successor (whoever that might be). Whether he does or not, it's not likely to matter, the Liberal Party has no time to recover from their abysmal polling, even with a new leader.

Multiculturalism's latest failure in Canada

Canada has long espoused multiculturalism under various Liberal governments for many decades now, dating back to the previous Prime Minister Trudeau (an equally bad leader to his son). The list of failures of this supposed approach to a social fabric, is that all it serves to do is rip the social fabric.  Canada used to marvel that our "cultural mosaic" of multiculturalism was superior to the American melting pot approach to a social fabric (i.e. bring your own culture, but adapt and add only the best parts of what you were leaving behind to American society).

The truth is multiculturalism is an unabashed failure, and it's begun to take deep root in America.   Do not allow yourselves as a nation to continue down this path to eventual failure:

Trudeau is much like Let's Go Brandon, except he is unequivocally the worst Prime Minister in Canadian history.  In fact, he's so bad, he's overshadowed his father's leftist failures.

Meanwhile in Canada, conservatives voted out a leader who was a Canadian version of a RINO.  He lost to Trudeau in the last election.  He flip flopped.  He has been a simp when it comes to the trucker convoy when it presented a golden opportunity for conservatives to embrace populism.

Good riddance to bad baggage. 

Canadian election meant nothing, and American pundits getting it wrong

The votes are still being counted so there may be a small shift of one or two here and there, but Canada has just completed a snap election that did absolutely nothing, despite high turnout. You'll likely see news clips of Prime Minister Trudeau claiming he has a mandate, it's a lie. I'm not just saying that as a disgruntled conservative who had been hoping for a better outcome (though that does describe me).  Take a look at the graph below.

Every party has almost exactly the same number of seats as it did after the 2019 election.  The changes were insignificant.  The net effect of this election was basically to revert to the results of the previous election and remove the impact of minor changes including members of parliament who left the liberal party after Trudeau's mistreatment of female party members.  Trudeau called a snap election unnecessarily, hoping to capitalize on great polling numbers, that faded quickly after he called the election. People it seems did not care for his opportunism.

In Canada, the executive and legislative branches of government are the same.   In order to have a majority government and control all legislation, a party needs 170 seats of the 338 seat available. The Prime Minister is the leader of the party with the most seats, whether they form a majority government or have to create a coalition with another party.  The Liberals had a minority government prior to yesterday's election, so they worked with the socialist New Democrat Party to get legislation passed. They had hoped to change that, but they failed. The Conservatives hoped for much more success with a new leader, he was so forgettable that they too failed. 

Unfortunately, the status quo is bad for Canada, as it ensures that the Liberal Party will continue to work with the socialist NDP party and continue to drift the country ever further leftward.

I have seen a lot of American pundits claim that Canada's Conservative Party is still a left leaning party when compared to Republicans. That is a gross inaccuracy.  The conservative voters in Canada in large part would be considered conservatives in America.  The same is true of the members in the Conservative Party.  But there is a significant problem.  Canada is dominated by left-leaning liberals and when combined with socialists, that represents the majority of the electorate.  Conservatives have won majority governments in parliament as recently as Stephen Harper's leadership less than a decade ago. But in order to do so, they have had to moderate their conservative values. The high-water mark for conservative voters in Canada is about 40%. So in winning, the Conservative Party have had to moderate their platforms to be palatable enough to hit that 38% to 40% range.  But when they win, they have been able to push the center back towards the right somewhat.  Stephen Harper lowered taxes, pushed conservative values but had to walk a thin line to do so.  The difficulty with that is that in order to get back to where a right-leaning Republican would feel at home living in Canada, it would take about 40 consecutive years of Conservative Party leadership and slow change.

That sucks, but it is the reality of the situation.  Canadian Conservatives are like Democrats in the U.S., they have to be dishonest about their positions in order to have any chance to win.  We don't love it, so don't judge us.  Saying I am not as conservative as Lisa Murkowski is offensive (don't worry it doesn't bother me) but more importantly it's outright wrong (that does bother me).

One more aside on this, in order to vote I either need an election card or two pieces of identification, one of which must have a photo and both must have my current address.  Why does that seem so difficult to do in some states? (I know the answer, but it really should be a big focus for Republicans nationally).

Canada imposes travel sanctions on non-vaccinated, while creating new woke holiday

Thanks COVID, for helping make the world a more authoritarian place.  Even though my blog is primarily about U.S. politics, my interest in its founding principle extend beyond U.S. borders.  I'm unfortunately not an American. I'm Canadian, envious of the amount of freedom Americans still have relative to other countries.

Case in point, my own government has imposed travel restrictions for travelers entering Canada which recursively affects Canadian citizens.  Going down a rabbit hole on our federal website I came across these conditions for Canadians returning from a vacation to the U.S. or another country (which I will summarize below if you prefer to skip the details):

Pre-entry test requirements All travellers 5 years of age or older, regardless of citizenship, must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result. You don't require a test to fly within Canada.

There are no exemptions to pre-entry testing for fully vaccinated travellers.

If you're driving to land border crossing, you must take a test in the United States within 72 hours of your planned entry into Canada.

If you're flying to Canada, you must take a test within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of your flight to Canada. Airlines will refuse boarding to travellers who are unable to provide a valid molecular test result.

If you have a connecting flight:

    -the test must be conducted within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of your last direct flight to Canada

    -you may need to schedule the test in your transit city

All travellers must:

    -provide one of the accepted types of tests, not an antigen test

    -keep proof of your test results for the 14-day period that begins on the day you enter Canada

You must show proof of your test results even if you:

    -have tested negative for COVID-19 previous to the 72 hour period

    -have been vaccinated for COVID-19

    -recovered from COVID-19 and no longer test positive

    -recovered from COVID-19 and continue to test positive

At this time, travellers should have their test performed at a reputable laboratory or testing facility (i.e., one recognized by the local government or accredited by a third party, such as a professional organization or international standards organization).

...If a Canadian citizen, person registered under the Indian Act, or permanent resident does not provide proof of a valid molecular test result they:

    -will be allowed entry, but may be subject to a fine of up to $5,000 per day or face criminal prosecution

    -may also be required to go to a designated quarantine facility if they are symptomatic on arrival at the border, or do not have a suitable quarantine plan

In summary: you must get a test within 3 days prior to returning to Canada.  It must an "accepted" test.  You must keep the proof on you for 14 days. If you fail to meet the requirements upon return you will either be subject to quarantine or a fine of up to $5,000 per day.

That all seems perfectly reasonable excessive. They are making it nearly impossible to stay unvaccinated.  I don't trust the vaccines due to the lack of sufficient testing, so I was planning on waiting as long as possible to see if the long term side effects of RNA vaccines are a disaster in the real world testing environment.  But this makes me want to not get vaccinated at all out of spite for the authoritarian government. 

But hey, don't worry Canadians, you'll be placated with another holiday to forget about this intrusion on your freedoms because...

Meanwhile, the same ultra 'liberal' federal government which took away Remembrance Day as a statutory  federal holiday years ago is adding a new federal holiday shortly after Labor Day called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honor indigenous survivors of residential schools.  Not to downplay the atrocities that happened at some schools, but why not combine it with Remembrance Day and honor anyone who lost their freedoms as well as those who fought to protect it for others?  To add insult to injury the name of the holiday is ridiculously Trudeau-esque. It's a woke-named holiday.  I have never been so unhappy about getting another day off work.

The ultra-liberal Trudeau government is acting above the law, involved in yet another scandal, and almost got forced into an election just ne year after their previous narrow electoral win.  Unfortunately the even more liberal (in fact outright socialist) NDP party voted to keep the government intact.

Are Canada's ruling conservatives in trouble?

There's a federal election coming in Canada in 2015.  The Conservative party after having twice governed with a minority government finally won a majority in the last election.  They've been able to govern in a more conservative fashion and play closer to their own agenda than in the past.  But an expenses scandal in the appointed senate, most prominently among conservative senators, has caused voter support to falter.

In conjunction with that, the son of Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Canada's most liberal Prime Minister ever, has taken on the helm of the Liberal party and despite his mammoth lack of experience, he has name recognition and some charisma and is siphoning off voters from both the Conservatives and the formerly surging socialist New Democrat Party.  That's a harbinger of bad news.
