Friday Musical Interlude - Friday Night Gurus

Last week I had a Friday Musical Interlude that actually featured the word "Friday" in the title. Continuing that trend, here's Friday Night Gurus by the Studio Killers.

Friday Musical Interlude - Rhiannon (Rosebud version)

Last week in the Friday Musical Interlude, I implied that musical talent has declined with the passing years.  In days gone by people crafted their music and practiced and worked hard and they believed in what they were singing about - it wasn't about the fast money. Yeah, there were drug problems and a lot of terrible self-indulgent music was made as well.  But the music when done well was incredible.

A stunning example of someone living their music is Stevie Nicks' incredible performance of Rhiannon from the Rosebud documentary.  Rhiannon is an ethereal song but with the live version, this one in particular there's another higher gear.  Watch Stevie pour herself into the song from about the 5 minute mark onward. You don't see Lady Gaga doing that.

Enjoy.

Front-Page Friday: Coup D'Etat

My Friday Musical Interlude is dead.  There's no time for that anymore.  I'm planning on doing longer form essay type posts this year.  Finally.  I've been wanting to do so for some time, in order to add more value but I've not been able to do so.  However, since I will not be able to do so every day, I will replace the Friday Musical Interlude with a link-around to an important post or video that follows the same principle and deals with a more contemporaneous focus.

Today, Tim Pool discusses whether the storming of the Capitol was a coup d'etat. (Spoiler, anybody with any amount of common sense will say no).

Friday Musical Interlude - Social Media Week Mash-up

This week I've been looking at social media and it's impact on society, people, culture, etc.  While I've barely scratched the surface, it's alreadt reached Friday, which is Friday Musical Interlude day.  So I decided to mash up the two things.  Here's a video of a 2017 original song by Joely Rendle, called Social Media Song.

Friday Musical Interlude - A musical documentary

Switching gears a bit, this week's Friday Musical Interlude features a documentary Hotel California: LA from The Byrds to The Eagles which explores the Los Angeles California music scene, in part, from the mid 60sthrough the mid 70s.

Friday Musical Interlude - Ending Soon

Posting musical content on the website on Fridays has been an enjoyable diversion but there are two problems with it.  Firstly, the content posted via links to Youtube is often copyrighted material that gets removed or has the audio overwritten.  So the posts are sometimes temporal at best. Secondly, they are a diversion from the main purpose of this blog.  I intend to replace the Friday Musical Interlude with something more relevant but still diversionary in nature.  Tricky.  Frankly I have no clue what yet, but by drawing a line in the sand, I will be forced to come up with something.

A not Friday Musical Interlude - Wheat Kings

It's not time for a Friday Musical Interlude but Gord Downie, lead singer of the Canadian band The Tragically Hip was diagnosed not too long ago with terminal brain cancer.  Instead of quietly disappearing Downie and the Hip decided to do one last concert tour culminating in a concert this past Saturday in the band's hometown of Kingston, Ontario.  The concert was broadcast nationally and it was very moving.

The Tragically Hip were a great band, entirely underappreciated in the United States.  Mostly. They had a lengthy career (releasing albums from 1987 through 2015) and spawned a wealth of memorable songs as well as mega-hits (in Canada at least).  Their memorable songs ranged from the melancholy to hard rock to near-country.

I thought I'd share one of their more moving songs with my American audience of readers.  The song Wheat Kings is in some ways a political song but not really - it's just about an incredibly sad situation.  And it's a prime example of why Downie has been such an important part of the Canadian musical landscape.  Their contributions will be missed and not forgotten.

Friday Musical Interlude - Amok

Today's Friday Musical Interlude is brought to you by German group Ledernacken (German for Leatherneck) with their weird but catchy song Amok from 1983.  The music of Ledernacken was a mix of electronic, hard rock and African rhythm with lyrics that were meant to be ironically violent and sexist (or so I am led to believe).  Since the lyrics are predominantly German, I don't pay much attention to them anyway - not speaking German and all. But beyond the controversy of the lyrics, this is simply a catchy song.

Today's Friday Musical Interlude is another dust collector from the late 70's. It's kitchy but catchy.

Friday Musical Interlude - Are You John Wayne?

I'm a bit busy today so instead of a political post, I'm reverting to an old staple on my blog from years ago; Friday Musical Interlude. The song is called "Are You John Wayne?" by Tropical Velvet Rebels.

Friday Musical Interlude - Photograph

Ringo Starr's song Photograph from 1973. In case you haven't figured out this months theme for Friday Musical Interlude, I'd guess you're under 15 years old.
