Unintended Consequences & the $15/hr Minimum Wage

Wendy's image problem or stealth use of  Rule 5?
Somehow this issue is trending on Facebook. And you must already know that Donald Trump is going to be asked about this tomorrow (so too Hillary Clinton who will say "it's wrong" and then be she'll be left alone).

The real effect of the demand for minimum wage is on clear display at Wendy's.  Replace people with self-serve kiosks.  The unintended consequences for asking for an unreasonable wage relative to the work effort is - no more minimum wage jobs.
Progressives just don’t understand the fact (not science fiction) that robots are about to take over the majority of jobs (and especially low-paying jobs) in the coming decades.

That, and the real minimum wage is actually $0.00.

...After strikes and the demand that the minimum wage be raised to $15/hour, fast food chains have decided that instead of paying someone $15 to push buttons with pictures of food on them, it would be much more cost effective for companies to just roll out self-service kiosks that they can pay $0.00 an hour without benefits so customers can push buttons with pictures of food themselves.
This will become a campaign issue, guaranteed.  But the important thing to understand is this:

1.  Consumers benefit from increased efficiency in the forms of lower cost
2.  Companies can only attract and keep customers by improving price and/or quality and/or customer service experiences.
3.  The natural tendencies for companies that survive is to improve what they do in those areas.
4.  Distortions to the capitalist operating system result in distortions to markets for everything - including labor.

Item 4 leads to offshoring of jobs to where labor is cheaper and requirements for companies in terms of taxes and even red tape are less cumbersome.  Now it also leads to onshoring of jobs by using robots.

People arguing for a minimum wage do not understand that their actions, their demands, have consequences.  Someone, or something, will do the jobs that they refuse to do, at an even lower wage.  At some point this becomes too low for anyone.  Perhaps the cost of maintaining a robotic cook becomes too expensive for the company.  In a situation where the floor is reached, things change. Wages adjust.  There becomes a natural equilibrium via the "invisible hand". People stop learning to serve burgers and start learning to program robots because that's where the money really is.

It's all common sense.  Unfortunately common sense has become a precious commodity these days.

Friday Musical Interlude - Mama Lover

Russian pop artists / eye candy Serebro combining Friday Musical Interlude with Rule 5 Friday with their song Mama Lover from 2012.

My second ever Rule 5 Friday post

I haven't succumbed to Rule 5 Friday normally, in fact only twice now I think.  Instead I would post Friday Musical Interludes.  I figured out a way to combine the two, at least one time.

Ziegfeld Girls from the 1920's and Parov Stelar's music from the 2010's.  A surprisingly good mix.

Rule 5 - Vintage Hottie

I've never subscribed to Rule 5 for blogging, but in an attempt to bump readership, I've decided to occasionally bow to the rule and as a result, here's today's vintage hottie. And I mean, really vintage. And really hot.

Because...

An Eye Candy Experiment

Lord knows I've resisted Rule 5 for getting blog traffic.  It detracts from the blog's credibility in my opinion.  But I am at heart moved by evidence, and being a database marketing guy, you always have to test ideas.

Not that a spike in the volume of traffic would change my mind about hiking my blog traffic would change my mind about posting eye candy from time to time.  It's more about satisfying my curiosity about whether it would actually make a difference or not.

So here it is for you, some eye candy.

Did I miss the point?

By Popular Request - A Friday Musical Interlude

A few years back I had Friday Musical Interludes to have some music break up the constant political ranting.  Since I don't use the Rule 5 Fridays advice that guarantees a million hits on your web page (not out of moral indignation - I'm married, it's a physical harm issue for me...), I decided long ago to use music instead.

That was before I gave it up to focus on Search Engine Optimization considerations.  Unsuccessfully.

Recently I was bombarded with requests - well, okay one request - to bring back the Friday Musical Interludes.  Maybe just this once...

James N. Common's Rumble and Sway released in March of 2013, it's an "Americanized Southern swamp gospel blues" song style (from a British artist) that is as catchy as anything I've heard recently. I've always enjoyed the music of the southern United States - blues, rock, gospel, country, zydeco or whatever. Given that and the fact that I just posted about rednecks earlier today, I guess this is an appropriate song choice.

Enjoy.

Succumbing to Rule 5

Ugh. Just gimme the site hits.  Even if this works, it's my first and last Rule 5 post.

UPDATED: Alinsky Rule 5 in full effect!!

If ever you needed proof that Alinsky's Rules for Radicals are in full effect on the American left, look at the reactions to the town hall outrage over health care. Rule #5 is related to ridiculing your opponents. It's on full display here.

Alinsky's rule might be on high alert use over the next month - Democrats can't debate ideas yet (if ever) because they haven't read the bill yet. There's no alternative to ridicule.

One small irony is that the liberal meme machine can't seem to find which type of ridicule will stick and are throwing as much at the wall to see what sticks. They're not as on a single message as usual.

Below are some examples of the insults they are using. Given that they can't debate [are you listening GOP?], this is the perfect opportunity to invite them to town hall debates on the issues. No thugs versus 'mobs', just one on one debates. It's something John McCain tried to get Barack Obama to agree on during the election campaign. Obama weaseled out of it. They'll do the same now. But it shows the weakness of their position. Facts versus insults, on an issue this big, should see facts win out. That is, provided [are you listening GOP?] all the legwork isn't done by concerned citizens, but also by Republican leadership. Don't be afraid of the mobs - the people portesting peacefully, are on your side.

Astro turfers - if you can't beat them, defame them.

Brooks Brothers empty suits organized by right wing groups - the old class warfare ploy

Mobs - with a dash of 'ruined the country' thrown in.

Nazis - the classic fallback insult for the flustered liberal.

Racists - the ultimate fallback for the liberal who has nothing else to go on.

More mobs; ending with some humor.

UPDATE: They forgot to mention the KKK - until now. [HT Hot Air]
