Anarchy in the U.K.

The Sex Pistols song if it were remade today it would be called "Diversity in the U.K.".  The U.K. is a once slow-rolling, now hurtling along disaster.  Diversity should mean diversity of opinion, not diversity of ethnicity. Whether the U.K. recognizes that in time is becoming increasingly clear; they won't.  I mean, a lot of people have but it hasn't translated to votes or the parliament and won't likely in due time.

U.K.'s leftward drift, and maybe a silver lining?

As I said, in the U.K. the Labour Party is bound to drag the country leftward, well out of step with the U.S., most of Europe and eventually, Canada as well when they have their next election.  Paul Joseph Watson, breaks it down.  While I disagree with his take on the problems with "first past the post" elections, he does find some good news in the U.K.'s rejection of faux conservatism:

I get his frustration, but the first past the post tends to work better in the long run for conservatives, than it does for the left.  In Canada, the Reform Party from 1987 grew to the point where it replaced the conservative party as the conservative viewpoint by the time the party merged with the conservative party.

In five years, in the U.K., the Reform U.K. party will be much stronger much faster than it's Canadian counterpart took to get there.

Meanwhile in the U.K., a leftward shift

The conservative party in the U.K. has admittedly gone off the rails and well into woke territory. You lose the confidence of the electorate when you lose sight of your vision that brought you to power, or by the vision itself resulting in failure.  In the case of the Tories in the U.K., the former situation led to their downfall.  They needed a reality check.

The unfortunate result is a massive Labour Party win that means further leftward drift and erosion of what made the United Kingdom great in the first place.  The Labour Party ran on "change", nothing more specific than the notion that the country was going in the wrong direction.  This was the exact approach Obama took in 2008; don't say anything (or at most very little) about what type of change you plan on making, just tap into the discontent and let the voters assume you mean exactly what they are thinking. Be a Tabula Rasa for them. 

And while the country was definitely headed in the wrong direction in many respects, and the conservative Tories were in dire need of a slap in the face wake up call, the price is likely to be steep for that correction. Are we going to see a decade of Labor party leadership? What damage will they do to Britain while in power?  Could they seek to rejoin the E.U. for example?

Saying the right things is one thing, doing the right things is not likely to follow.  Let's hope the conservatives get their act together in the next few years.

Hey, let's ban cars too

Not to be too glib, because a lot of leftitst would be thrilled to witness the disappearance of the automobile.  However, those who want to ban guns because guns kill people should take note - cars kill people too, often inadvertently, but increasingly, not always;

Several people have been injured after a car mounted the pavement and mowed down pedestrians outside the Natural History Museum in London this afternoon.

A man was pinned down by security guards and arrested by police in the heart of the capital's museum land in Kensington.

Hundreds of terrified tourists fled the scene as the black Toyota Prius - a registered minicab - careered into a sign before ultimately crashing into a crowd of as many as 10 people as it hit a silver car, according to witnesses.

Gun laws are extremely strict in the U.K. but they still have murders. They still have terrorism. Gun laws are not the answer. Maybe stricter penalties for murder and assault might work. Maybe it's something else. The point is that guns don't kill people, people kill people. Otherwise while we are at it we should not only ban guns, we should also ban shovels, rakes, steak knives, camping (because grizzly bears), construction sites, fire and doctors who can't cure cancer.

U.K. votes, barely, to keep Brexit alive

Theresa May read the tea leaves wrong.  Pollsters two months ago had her perched to get a mega-majority if she called a snap election.  Predicated on a mandate to strongly negotiate Brexit, she did so.  It was partly political but it seemed to be a shrewd move.  As election day approached the popular support numbers for the conservatives tanked and May has barely hung on to maintain a coalition government with the pro-Brexit DUP party.

It turns out the move by May was a political blunder, but to be fair, it was one she didn't see coming.  It will be interesting to see what the post analysis brings out.  Did ultra-leftist Corbyn bring out, a la Obama, a stronger than anticipated youth contingent of voters?  Or did, as the British MSM seemed to expound, lose popularity as people got to know her better?  At least an aggressive Brexit negotiation is still on track, but the election really feels like a badly missed opportunity for the Tories (conservatives) in the U.K. to strengthen their position for the next several years.  But in every problem there is opportunity.

Expect an emboldened Corbyn to be even more outrageous than he has previously and with that exposure comes the opportunity to paint him as the extremist that he really is, setting May (or her successor) up for a strong victory next time around.
