Obama's latest meaningless deadline

Today is President Obama's deadline day for a deal on the raising of the debt ceiling via getting a deal struck on cost cutting (and as he sees it, tax increases). Uh, no.

This is just the latest in a series of Obama deadlines that either carry no weight or slip by without being fulfilled. There is no longer any weight to the Presidential ultimatums issued by Obama. Off the top of my head I can think of several deadlines that passed without being fulfilled on time or at all. I'm sure there are many others too.

Remember closing Guantanamo? Or how about his numerous health care deadlines? How about the oil spill clean up? How about a promised economic recovery? How about Israel accepting 1967 borders? Okay that one was not so much a deadline but a condition, but the principle is the same - the words don't carry the weight of the office of the president. They don't carry the weight of his 2008 approval ratings when so many Republicans feared going against him. Those in the know with their own agendas disregard his deadlines.

Perhaps they do so at their own peril but it sure looks like that's no insurmountable risk. Not only politically, there's as far as governing goes too. Reaching the debt ceiling means not paying Social Security only if Obama chooses to cut there instead of the Department of Education or Defense.

This latest deadline like all his other failed promises and missed deadlines carries no weight.
