Gay Anderson Cooper probably voting for Obama

In case you haven't heard, news personality Anderson Cooper (CNN) is gay.  He came out of the closet today. Does it matter?  A little bit, yes.

Via the Huffington Post;
Anderson Cooper has, at long last, publicly said he is gay.

Cooper made the announcement in an email to writer Andrew Sullivan.

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," he wrote.

Cooper's sexuality has long been the subject of ample media speculation, but he has never publicly confirmed it.

“I just don’t talk about my personal life," he told New York magazine in 2005. "...The whole thing about being a reporter is that you’re supposed to be an observer and to be able to adapt with any group you’re in, and I don’t want to do anything that threatens that.”
Does it matter?  Cooper seems to think so or he wouldn't have come out.  The timing just clarifies what those who pay attention already suspected and that is, Anderson Cooper is just another liberal Obama supporter.

Yes, he does a lot better than others in the media in his efforts to remain neutral in his political commentary (not perfect, but certainly better than Rachel Maddow for example).  He's to be commended for those efforts.  In fact, his coming out serves as an indicator of which we he leans - not simply because he's gay - and helps with transparency for viewers.

The reason this aids in transparency is because he came out shortly after president Obama announced his supposed evolution on the subject of gay marriage.  That is not a coincidence.  He's piling on an issue that matters to him.  Liberal or not (liberal, definitely), Cooper obviously supports the president's evolution and wants to push that agenda further.  Given Mitt Romney's position on gay marriage, Cooper clearly will not be supporting him.  While you knew that, many people wouldn't have recognized that and some subtle biases might just slip through undetected for those people.  In that regard this disclosure only helps.  People will decide their presidential preferences without subtle misdirection from Cooper, unintended or otherwise.

    1. I was trying to give Anderson the benefit of the doubt - he's been fair at times - but you are right, that Tea Baggin' comment is a valid point. He has been unfair often enough.

      Thanks for the link.

  2. Oh please, he's more neutral then those other windbags spewing their vitriol on their own news shows. Let's not even bring up the moron also known as Bill O' Reilly.

    1. "Moron"? You can't post without personal insults? That doesn't advance your argument that he's more neutral than other "windbags".

      Compared to Chris Matthews, sure Cooper is neutral, but that's a low bar. Calling him neutral is simply mistaken or else deliberate misinformation. The problem I have with Cooper is his facade of neutrality. People will believe he's neutral when he clearly is not. That's deceptive.
