Hillary hypocrisy

Hillary Clinton unveiled a platform to reduce America's carbon footprint.  A couple of hours later, this:

Smoking gun via America Rising. And the description of the hypocrisy via another youtube user, All Across:
Just hours after Hillary Clinton unveiled her presidential campaign's push to solve global warming through an aggressive carbon-cutting plan, she sauntered up the steps of a 19-seat private jet in Des Moines, Iowa. The aircraft, a Dassault model Falcon 900B, burns 347 gallons of fuel per hour. And like all Dassault business jets, Hillary's ride was made in France.
Smoking gun indeed - and the smoke smells like jet exhaust.

Saturday Learning Series - Atlantic Jihad documentary

Via the Youtube channel of Krsto Zrnov Popović;
Whilst the Arabs have been acknowledged as a prime force in the early usage of slaves from Africa, very little has been written about their usage of White slaves, whether they were part of the Russian slave trade or those kidnapped by Arab pirates. However, in recent years, the research of some authors has been bringing this issue to light.

The origins of African slavery in the New World cannot be understood without some knowledge of the millennium of warfare between Christians and Muslims that took place in the Mediterranean and Atlantic and the piracy and kidnapping that went along with it. In 1627 pirates from the Barbary Coast of North Africa raided distant Iceland and enslaved nearly four hundred astonished residents. In 1617 Muslim pirates, having long enslaved Christians along the coasts of Spain, France, Italy, and even Ireland, captured 1,200 men and women in Portuguese Madeira. Down to the 1640s, there were many more English slaves in Muslim North Africa than African slaves under English control in the Caribbean. Indeed, a 1624 parliamentary proclamation estimated that the Barbary states held at least 1,500 English slaves, mostly sailors captured in the Mediterranean or Atlantic. Millions European Christians were kidnapped and enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 -- a far greater number than had ever been estimated before. Professor Robert Davis, in his book Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800, estimated that 1 million to 1.25 million White people were enslaved by North African pirates between 1530 and 1780.

One of the things that both the public and many scholars have tended to take as given is that slavery was always racial in nature -- that only blacks have been slaves. But that is not true, We cannot think of slavery as something that only white people did to black people. Slavery in North Africa has been ignored and minimized, in large part because it is on no one's agenda to discuss what happened. The enslavement of Europeans doesn't fit the general theme of European world conquest and colonialism that is central to scholarship on the early modern era, he said. Many of the countries that were victims of slavery, such as France and Spain, would later conquer and colonize the areas of North Africa where their citizens were once held as slaves. Maybe because of this history, Western scholars have thought of the Europeans primarily as "evil colonialists" and not as the victims they sometimes were. Between 1580 and 1680. That meant about 8,500 new slaves had to be captured each year. Overall, this suggests nearly a million slaves would have been taken captive during this period. Using the same methodology, Davis has estimated as many as 475,000 additional slaves were taken in the previous and following centuries.

The result is that between 1530 and 1780 there were almost certainly 1 million and quite possibly as many as 1.25 million white, European Christians enslaved by the Muslims of the Barbary Coast. Enslavement was a very real possibility for anyone who traveled in the Mediterranean, or who lived along the shores in places like Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, and even as far north as England and Iceland.from 1500 to 1650, when trans-Atlantic slaving was still in its infancy, more white Christian slaves were probably taken to Barbary than black African slaves to the Americas,Pirates (called corsairs) from cities along the Barbary Coast in north Africa -- cities such as Tunis and Algiers -- would raid ships in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, as well as seaside villages to capture men, women and children.

The impact of these attacks were devastating -- France, England, and Spain each lost thousands of ships, and long stretches of the Spanish and Italian coasts were almost completely abandoned by their inhabitants. At its peak, the destruction and depopulation of some areas probably exceeded what European slavers would later inflict on the African interior. We have lost the sense of how large enslavement could loom for those who lived around the Mediterranean and the threat they were under," he said. "Slaves were still slaves, whether they are black or white, and whether they suffered in America or North Africa.

Not this Riptide.  Back in 1985 Robert Palmer recorded this retro-sounding melancholy song of the same name as the more recent Vance Joy hit.

More views on Trump

Views on Trump versus McCain from a man who I believe is probably a libertarian, on Donald Trump. Well spoken, and reasonable I'd say. I disagree with his overly rabid anti-war views but I understand where they are coming from. Muhammad Ali was not a war hero. That aside, this is worth a watch.

What's interesting to me is that many on the right who feel the GOP needs a good shake up because they have become Establishment vs. everyone else, don't seem to appreciate Trump.  Win or lose, he may be the wake-up call the GOP needs.

Thursday Hillary Bash - Is she losing Chuck Todd?

MSNBC's Chuck Todd weighs in on what a recent poll shows regarding Hillary Clinton's numbers in various swing states.  The numbers are not good, and Todd speculates as to why.

He takes a reasonably objective tone throughout the discussion.  Right near the end he says "there's something just not quite right" followed at the very end by "Boom".  It could be just speculation on her campaign, or Todd could be leaning towards Sanders.  Is Clinton losing Chuck Todd, or is it just the swing state numbers she's losing?  Or both? Or am I reading too much into this segment?

You decide.

No Trump Card (Part 2)

Previously I mentioned that a Trump Candidacy would not be a good idea for the GOP and not necessarily a boon to conservative voters, as far as getting elected, and the implications of him winning.  Previously, I focused on the election portion of the reasons.  Now I'll look at the latter part of the equation.  All of the electability issues aside, suppose Trump succeeds and makes it to the Oval Office.  Then what?

My first thought is that he'll get to appoint a number of Supreme Court Justices. 1? 3? We're back into wild card territory again.  We need another Scalia on the court not a Sotomayor.  And my thinking is that given the Donald's history of coziness with liberals, I'd put money on him nominating a social-liberal justice over a Constitutional originalist, every time.  That alone makes the future of SCOTUS decisions a huge liberal win.  It makes him only marginally better than a Clinton or Sanders, and again, it's a roll of the dice and a prayer that conservatives get lucky with his nominee(s). That in turn makes him a dubious choice to be the GOP nominee.

No Trump Card (Part 1)

Let me start by saying I am happy Trump is up in the polls because the media keeps telling people they should not like Trump since he's racist (not really) and disrespectful (maybe blunt with a hint of disrespectful) and a blow hard.  People are reacting inversely to the media dictates.  I love that.  And Donald Trump so far is really only putting the boots to issues that the GOP 'nobility' have been refusing to address. John McCain is a squish and has done more for liberal Democrats than he has for conservatives, for the sake of stroking his own ego apparently.  Lindsey Graham is a RINO, in South Carolina no less, a state that surely could proffer a more conservative senator.   So Trump fighting back against them is a good thing. And illegal immigration IS a problem.  He's creating discussions.

Furthermore, having Trump in the race, eventual nomination winner or not, is attracting attention to the race.  That's free marketing, people.  If Trump truly has ended up on the side of the GOP, he's offering everyone a golden opportunity to get attention with very little spending required. He's offering the media a whipping boy so that other candidates can get a few extra months under the radar. If that's what they really want.  They shouldn't though.

Thee's a reason Trump is up in the polls - he's fighting, not kowtowing to the liberal media. He's brash.  That's good.

And while other candidates can tout their executive experience (certainly better than a president's wife or a senator's experience in actually running something), Trump has real-world business experience.  He's not going to run an administration as if it were a charity. He'll look at the bottom line.

Here comes the BUT

July 21, 2015

Why is Trump still surging?

Why is Trump still surging? I think this post in the Washington Times captures it completely - he's plain-speaking and he leaves the impression that cleaning house is more important than the impression he leaves behind:
People like Mr. Trump not because they think he will be dainty and gentle inside the china shop of the federal government. They love him because they think he will be an enraged, groaning and goring bull, slashing his giant, shiny horns deep into every corner of the china shop as all the experts — shrieking — go scurrying in every direction to get away from the rampaging beast.
Yep, that.

The Ashley Madison conundrum.

Recently, the dating website dedicated to cheaters, Ashley Madison, was hacked. The hackers took the names of the cheaters, some 37 million of them, and threatened to release all of them unless the website is shut down:
The hackers called themselves the "Impact Team," and the potential release includes "profiles with all the customers' secret sexual fantasies and matching credit card transactions, real names and addresses, and employee documents and emails."

In a statement, Avid Life Media, the parent company, said: "At this time, we have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorized access points. We are working with law enforcement agencies, which are investigating this criminal act."
There's the crux. Cheating is immoral. Seeing a site promoting it and profiting off of it is despicable. But it is not illegal. Hacking is illegal. At least this type of hacking is - it's theft. And who appointed these moral crusaders judge and jury?

I'd be happy if the website was gone. But it's a free country. If cheating is to be stopped, it must be through teaching people about morality, not through coercion, blackmail or force.

Confederate Flag - Stuff I found on Facebook and Youtube

Here are some people's opinions on the Confederate flag that you might (or might not) find surprising.

Shopping Malls were the idea of a socialist

...And he hated how they turned out. It's weird how things that came from one frame of reference can end up somewhere else entirely. Just like the pledge of allegiance was a socialist creation, so too was the idea of shopping malls.
Today shopping malls are seen as culprits in the rise of American car culture and the decline of walkable downtowns. But the inspiration for the shopping mall is in fact the town center of Vienna. Gruen, an Austrian Jewish architect born Viktor David Grünbaum, immigrated to New York with $8 in his pocket, and when he designed the first enclosed shopping centers in the mid-1950s, he envisioned a communal gathering like the one he knew back home, with a lively mix of commerce, art and entertainment.

...A socialist who hated cars (“Their threat to human life and health is just as great as the exposed sewer,” he once said), Gruen designed the development with long promenades and parking lots purposely built far away to encourage walking. In drawing Southdale’s original plan, Gruen imagined a medical center, schools and residences, not just a parade of glitzy stores.
Not surprisingly Gruen rued how malls turned out.
But Gruen never imagined that these mega-structures he had envisioned as town plazas would contribute to the suburban sprawl that he despised, and to the demise of the urban high street.

“I am often called the father of the shopping mall,” he once said, reflecting on his career two years before his death in 1978. “I would like to take this opportunity to disclaim paternity once and for all. I refuse to pay alimony to those bastard developments. They destroyed our cities.”
So sad. Suburbs, commerce, and supporting an increased demand for cars - it seems socialists are completely unaware of the notion of unintended consequences. Sometimes that's a good thing. I'm not saying that Gruen's original ideas behind the mall were bad. It sounds like a nifty mixed use concept. Except, as a socialist, you know the next step would be to somehow layer in some sort of indoctrination of people. I'm glad that didn't work out for them.

Che Guevara, car decal

This morning driving into work, I came across a BMW with one of those window decals that so many people seem to have these days.  You know the ones I'm talking about - the family members.  A father, mother, 2 daughters and a dog.  Except this one was different.  Instead of a white decal, it was a black silhouette of Che Guevara.  Have we really fallen this far?  A murderer's visage is appearing not only on t-shirts worn by hipster dufuses, who have no idea that they are sporting the face of a ruthless terrorist thug's face as part of their personal ensemble (or identity), but now some business guy in an expensive foreign car is tacitly supporting communist thuggery or else is too clued out to understand that is exactly what they are doing?

That's truly disappointing. Western society has lost touch with its sense. Che, for some reason is charismatic to many people.  How superficial. If Adolph Hitler had been a handsome dude, would current day hipsters thinks it was cool to sport Hitler t-shirts, or would his image be a window decal on a BMW now? That would be ironic since it's a German car. Nevertheless, the only difference between Che and Hitler, is that the latter was able to create a more monstrous volume of death. Both the far left socialists have blood on their hands, Hitler just had more. That aside, Che was more handsome.  That and a counter-culture reputation apparently makes him the more t-shirt-or-car-window-decal-worthy of the two monsters.

Neither should be idolized or become a piece of fashion or a car decal. Sad.

Why not Trump?

PJ Media points out that the "Silent Majority" is supporting Donald Trump, and asks the obvious question, why won't the GOP?

Ultimately I don't know that Donald Trump can win the general election. But he is saying things about issues in a blunt manner and more importantly he's talking about issues in a way that shows he doesn't want America to roll over and die in the face of declining strength. It reminds me of the Dylan Thomas poem,

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Donald Trump is no poet, but the point is: If you accept something as inevitable it will be so.  This is the case with the decline of America.  If you are not fighting for it, you are abandoning.  Trump at least, gets that.

Saturday Learning Series - Short Bio Wright Brothers

A short bio on the pioneers of flight, the Wright Brothers. This will be the first in a series of short, high level biographies presented via CloudBiography, on youtube.

Bad science ideas

Just a few thoughts on ideas that might seem cool in a science-fictiony way but that will not quite achieve what's expected of them.  Don't get the wrong idea, I'm all for technology progressing; it's given us modern medicine, flight, the internet, electricity, transportation, and space flight just to name a few examples.  But with advancing technology comes ethical questions, and of course questions of direction. If all of our technology were devoted to ever more lethal weapons of mass destruction, that would not be a good thing, again as an example.

But even the technology itself can be subject to questions of efficacy.

Mea Culpa on Cosby

Late in 2014 and early this year I commented on the allegations leveled against Bill Cosby. I argued that he should be treated as innocent until proven guilty.  As it turns out, Bill Cosby has admitted his guilt. Mea culpa, I was defending a guilty man.

Or was I?  I was only arguing that the presumption of innocence until proven guilty is the modus of the legal system in the West. Jumping to the conclusion that he was guilty of these terrible things before his day in court was wrong.  I made no assumption of his guilt or innocence. I stand by my initial suggestions.

Unfortunately for Bill Cosby not many people are going to continue to stand by him now that he's admitted that he got sedative drugs for women so that he could then have sex with them.  That is shameful and from the sound of his admission, felonious.

America's debt crisis explained

Yesterday I posted a video explaining Japan's debt.  Today, a senior fellow from CATO takes a look at America's debt.

Now is the time to play hardball with China

In brief:

Remember back in 2010 when China joined Russia in dropping the U.S. dollar as the medium of bi-lateral trade? And again in 2014 when the two nations teamed up to kill the dollar? Remember China hacking U.S. government and corporate secrets, pretty much always. China has a pretty lengthy history of aggressive, bad neighbor behavior.  And now their stock market is in deep trouble. It's in free fall and could be at the start of a crash.  True or not, make no mistake, there's underlying trouble.

Never let a crisis go to waste, right?

Now is the time to play hardball with China.  It's the perfect time to do something to prevent job offshoring, to remove Most Favored Nation status for China and to repatriate jobs to America.  It's an opportunity to not just knuckle under to China's belligerent rise as a world power. Strike them economically when they cannot afford it.  Why not?  They've been trying to do it to America for years.

Conservative media, please get all over this

In San Francisco, illegal immigrant Francisco Sanchez , who had been deported five times, shot and killed a young woman.  His public defender is blaming gun control.  The sheriff is backing San Francisco's sanctuary city approach to immigration.

It's not about guns.  It's about illegal immigration vs. legal immigration and it's about the wild west sanctuary cities that feel they can supersede federal law.

And it's about Hillary Clinton and her ilk hijacking the dialogue with a simple agreement that this is terrible and then jumping off onto their own agenda-driven talking points about immigration, or gun control.

We should be up in arms protesting sanctuary cities. We should double down on legal immigration not illegal immigration. This unfortunate event proves our points. It's tailor made for us as an issue.  We can stop this from happening again or at least as often if we can enact our agenda. We should be all over this .

So far, we're not.

A few quick hits on current events

700 companies have halted trading on the two big Chinese stock exchanges.  They may be in the middle of a bubble bursting. I would not be surprised if the Chinese economy turned out to be 70% paper tiger.

Meanwhile liberals have started a war with parts of the media over racial and gender quotas.  Jake Tapper, put up a good defense. People looking for skin color or gender instead of looking at the content of the interviews - the questions and responses of candidates - are just not qualified to be voting.  Childish views of the news don't merit the adult right to vote.  Their votes count as much as yours - and you are clearly paying attention to actual issues and candidate positions.  So that's fair.

Yes, the Obama administration planned to persecute their political enemies. Surely you are not surprised by that?

CNN is still softballing Hillary Clinton. Surely you are not surprised by that either?

And Jimmy Carter has decided to speak for none other than Jesus. He must know what Jesus would say, because he's been president, right? It's like only one step above his pay grade. Maybe he should let president Obama know what the pay grade entails.

I'm still saying let Greece fail.

Thursday Hillary Bash Bonus - Digging Dirt on Bernie

A bonus Thursday Hillary Bash today, thanks to a Drudge headline.

In politics it's normal to dig dirt on your opponents. It's probably normal to want to keep it quiet. But apparently Team Hillary is not only doing it on Bernie Sanders, and not only wanting to keep it quiet, they are doing the latter not...very...well:
...Asked if Team O'Malley had dispatched Flannel Man and Stripy to Burlington, campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said, "We have not, and they are not affiliated with our campaign."

But wait! Here's a clue: That T-shirt Flannel Man was wearing? It read, "New Hampshire for Jeanne Shaheen."

Earlier this year, Hillary Clinton absorbed much of Shaheen's political operation to run her Granite State campaign: state director Mike Vlacich, senior political aide Kari Thurman and spokesman Harrell Kirstein.

Asked if Flannel Man and Stripy belonged to Team Clinton, Kirstein did not respond.

Welcome to Burlington, Hillary. Next time, tell your people to leave their Shaheen shirts at home.
 Way to go Team Flannel.

Thursday Hillary Bash - Email dump 1 of 27 (maybe)

Last Friday, the first of what may be a regular Friday news dump, several thousand of Hillary Clinton's private server emails were released.  Clearly there is damage control going on.  Not only was she talking to someone behind the president's back, not only are many of her emails permanently missing, or classified, but they are spreading out the release of the emails - probably in hopes of burying the needle in the haystack so it won't be found. Or at least delaying the inevitable.

Despite all that, these email releases may be the gift to Republicans that keeps on giving.  The slow drip of information may be a Chinese water torture death for Clinton's presidential ambitions.

Suggested Reading on gay marriage reactions.

Charles C.W. Cooke responds to the preposterous notion that churches that will not perform gay marriage have their tax exempt status revoked.  It's ironic that those who would do anything possible to separate church and state to keep religion out of politics are evidently gung ho to have the state invade the sanctity of the church.  Hypocrisy maybe?

Ted Cruz on the other hand has gone the Bobby Jindal route and suggested that if you don't like the law you can ignore it. Dumb, dumb, dumb. That's the kind of thinking that leads to criminal activity - drugs, murder, theft, illegal immigration. It also seems like quite the double standard - obey these laws that we like, ignore these that we detest. I'll say it again, dumb - both logically and politically.

Stephen Crowder ruminates - on gay marriage, what's up with Hypocrite Hillary?

Rand Paul separates not just gay marriage but all marriage from government entirely. Quite well. He's being consistent  with his own principles.  It's not enough to sway me to support his candidacy, but it is exceptionally well put and convincing.

Finally, The Federalist contains reactions from numerous people, and is worth reading.

David Axel-liar!

David Axelrod, apparently lied when he had this to say about not knowing aboutHillary Clinton's personal emailserver:

That's because he was emailing her on it.
...Tuesday night’s massive dump of State Department emails shows that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was exchanging emails with another man also named David Axelrod. It must be a different guy, because the one warning about the “email trap” didn’t know anything about Clinton’s private email server and personal email address.
