Raining on the Republicans' Parade

I hate to do it.  I would love as much as the next Reagan conservative to see the Republicans pick up 70 seats in Congress and 15 seats in the Senate.  And there are reasons to be optimistic about a takeover of Congress and hopeful about the same in the Senate.  For example, Gallup's latest poll has Republicans up 10 points on the generic Congressional ballot among registered voters. It's never been that high. So what could possibly be wrong?

Raining on the Democrats' parade

Tonight President Obama will announce mission accomplished on Iraq. Never mind that they never supported the mission. Never mind that they called it a failure prior to the surge that the President will now take credit for succeeding.

The real issue is that there is a significant chance (let's say 40%) that during Obama's tenure the violence in Iraq will flare up to such a point that the end of combat operations that the President just declared, won't really be the end of combat operations.

Keep in mind that the withdrawal of the last combat troops leaves 50,000 soldiers in Iraq. I guess they're the non-combat army platoons. Keep in mind also that the withdrawn troops are just across the border in Kuwait, available at a moment's notice. Maybe they know the risk of declaring something over too soon is dangerous.

Then again, if liberals were amenable to learning from history (in this case George Bush's early declaration of victory in Iraq), they'd be conservatives.

Democrats off message for a reason

Back in 2008 the Democrats rode the "Hope and Change" message to the White House and large Congressional victories. Twenty two months later they are floundering and in large part it's because reality has subverted their narrative. The message that got them here is not able to be used to keep them in power. This November, when the Republicans are looking to do to Democrats what that rogue wave did to the Aleutian Ballad a few years back, the Democrats themselves will apparently still be looking for a coherent message to sell to the American people.

I think we're starting to see the development of a possible new trend that might be an outgrowth of Alinsky tactics.  Alinsky's first rule for radicals is as follows; "Power is not only what you have, but what an opponent thinks you have. If your organization is small, hide your numbers in the dark and raise a din that will make everyone think you have many more people than you do." That's happening more frequently today.

Here's the kicker - this guy turned out to be involved in a terror plot to blow up Canada's parliament. And unlike his claim, he wasn't a recent immigrant at the time - he was home grown. Much like his dancing must have made viewers at home groan.

Awful, awful pun.  As a disciplinary matter for that pun, I will force my self to watch that video once more.

Bed Bugs, Biden And Bureaucracy

Still not Biden.
Earlier I posted about blaming bed bugs on Biden. Aside from the sarcasm, and alliteration, there is an actual point that can be made about the 'sudden' bed bug outbreak. Why bedbugs? Why now? Blame the banning of DDT if you are looking for a human cause. But that's not the point. Some things just happen.

Bedbug Outbreak - I blame Joe Biden

Bedbugs were largely eradicated in the 1950s thanks to the now-banned synthetic pesticide DDT. As the epidemic grows again, so do fears ("bedbugs" was the 44th most searched term directly on the Centers for Disease Control website in 2009). According to the Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009, bedbug populations in the United States have increased by 500-percent in the past few years. To put things in perspective, there were 537 bedbug complaints in New York in 2004 and only 82 confirmed infestations. In 2009 those numbers skyrocketed to 10,985 complaints and 4,084 confirmed infestations
New York is taking the issue seriously. After forming a 10-member Bedbug Advisory Board, mayor Michael Bloomberg released a 39-page plan outlining bedbug control efforts and resources and guidelines for building managers and residents on how to deal with issues like disposing of infested furniture. And it's not just Manhattan that is fighting back by forming committees that educate the public and business owners to help stop problems from spreading. The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task force oversees issues in Columbus and the surrounding areas. Concerned citizens in Chicago formed a bedbug policy advocacy group. Toronto Public Health provides resources to the city's citizens and co-chairs the Toronto Bed Bug Project action committee.
And just because "bed" is in the bugs' name, hotels and apartments aren't the only victims. A Denver library had to destroy rare books after a September 2009 outbreak. Manhattan saw locations for Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret close down to fight infestations in summer 2010.
Not Joe Biden.
That's bad. I blame Joe Biden. What? If he can blame Obama's awful economic record, then I can blame the bed bug problem on him. Realistically speaking, Joe Biden wasn't around to participate in the DDT ban, although he was elected in 1972, the year it was banned.  So he didn't participate. But liberals sure did.  He is a liberal. If A=B and B=C, then A=C.

If you're a liberal reading this (some have) and your peeved about the silly association, good. Enjoy.  Enjoy it with much gusto as you enjoy the 'blame Bush' meme.  Seriously though, both ideas are silly.

Biden: We're moving in the right direction. Wrong.

Vice President Joe "BFD" Biden says we're moving in the right direction. Wrong Joe. Voters are moving in a 'right' direction, you are trying to move the country in a leftward direction.  That's not right.

The Democrats' blame Bush reminders to people about wanting to go back to how things were rings hollow. That is simply because it's not being nostalgic to want to go back to the unemployment levels under Bush. President Bush averaged 5.2% unemployment. In his last year, with the worst unemployment ratings, he averaged 5.9% Obama's average so far? 9.4% since January 2009. And he really didn't even take office until late January, which would push his average to 9.5%.

Strange - the declining unemployment rate stopped declining around the beginning/middle of 2007...right...after...the Democrats...took over...the legislature.  Hmmmmm.  You know what, maybe Biden is partly right.  Let's no go back to that.

Another tax lesson from Canada.

Taxes hurt.
The Ontario provincial government last year announced they would be combining their 8% provincial sales tax with the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax (a VAT tax like the one often hailed of late by progressives as a solution to national debt in America).

The sales tax was replaced on July 1st of this year by Harmonized Sales Tax, bringing the VAT to a combined, and stunning 13% in the province.  Statistics Canada released some inflation numbers last Friday indicating inflation in Ontario for July was 2.9 percent and 1.3 percent (nearly half) was attributable to the tax change. Those inflation numbers are the highest for any Canadian province for July, year over year.

A Google undo button? How about one for voters?

Google is testing an Undo button for emails sent, giving the sender 30 seconds to recall a message sent in haste or by accident. It's a great idea.

No more accidental emails causing problems.

Now how about one for voters? Imagine no Obamacare, no 1.4 trillion dollar deficits. Yep - that would be just awesome.

Where is the stock market going next?

According to Stealth Stocks, the markets are in trouble, because the economy is in trouble;
This Friday, we will get the revised GDP report for the second quarter. Estimates are for this to be revised lower from 2.4% down to 1.2%. Next month, the final revision could below 1% and pushing near zero, so it should be no wonder the bulls are having a hard time mustering any kind of offense.
The Fed is under the belief that it’s ZIRP (Zero interest rate policy) will prevent a double dip recession from occurring, based on historical precedence.
“The economy has never contracted with the difference between short- and long-term Treasury yields as wide as it is now. That gap, at 2.11 percentage points for 2- and 10-year notes, signals a 15.5 percent chance of a recession in the next year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.”
This is deceptive and illusory.
It assumes that banks will lend money because rates are so low. The reality is banks are in terrible shape.
Banks are a canary in the coal mine for the broader stock market! Housing and commercial real estate loans continue to be a nightmare for them.
Whether or not you want to blame President Obama or President Bush or someone else entirely for the current state of affairs, there is clearly zero indication that the current policies have done nothing to mitigate the problems. It can be argued that the efforts of the recovery act ARRA (the stimulus) have exacerbated the problem. Certainly the anti-business agenda has not solved the problem and in fact over the mid term may deepen the problem.  No matter what your political stripe you can't argue that the Democrats have done the job on the economy.  They have failed.  They have failed by the standards they set for themselves, and they have failed by any reasonable measure that is used.  Jobs saved is illusory.  Imagine how bad it would have been if we hadn't acted, is not exactly a winning argument.  Imagine how great things would be if you stayed out of the way and let the economy correct itself.  Perhaps then a real recovery would be underway.

Existing home sales 'unexpectedly' plummet.

No doubt this comes unexpectedly to the mainstream media.  Existing Home Sales have hit a 15 year low.  To be fair to the MSM, analysts were expecting a drop of 12%.  The actual drop came in at 27.2%;
The housing market is also being hampered by the weakening economic recovery. Unemployment remains stuck at 9.5 percent and many potential buyers worry they might not have a job to pay the mortgage.
Prices have fallen in part because foreclosures are running about 10 times higher than before the housing bust. Though the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage has sunk to 4.42 percent, many people can't qualify because banks have tightened their lending standards.
To sum up - high unemployment, lack of faith in a recovery, high foreclosure rates, banks tightening lending (apparently they have to keep everything available to lend to the government now, to cover those 1+ trillion dollar deficits).

There's a recipe for success! Perhaps the Democrats should have a "recovery summer" tour and tout the effects of the crap sandwich formerly know as the stimulus.

Tolerance is over-rated

Tolerance is over-rated.  At least the type of tolerance that the left is demanding of America. The truth is that the United States is tolerant enough already. When your opponent is radical Islam, tolerance is not needed. In fact, it's not even advisable.

Isaac Asimov once said "Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." Is that an elitist comment or just a good observation? Seriously, have you ever wondered why we get idiots in government?  I mean not just a few, but loads of them.  And I use the word 'loads' deliberately.  The answer is pretty simple actually.  Because anyone with any sort of insight is busy doing something else.  Talented people are busy being an engineer, a doctor, an entrepreneur, a teacher, a soldier, or even an actor. Something.  Anything.

Conservative palate cleanser

On my other (occasional) blog The Uncool Whip, I recently posted about Nancy Pelosi's bizarre endorsement of the idea of ferreting out who is nefariously funding the anger over the Ground Zero mosque. Not who is funding the mosque. In her world view, the problem is the people who have a problem with the mosque's insensitivity. If that's not pretzel logic, I'm not sure what is. And earlier today I posted here about Andy Ostroy's liberal anger and the contagion that it is.

A bizarre world view and anger at those who don't share it. The NRSC (National Republican Senatorial Committee) has the cleanser for the conservative palate.

Stupidity is contagious. So is liberal anger.
And they told you the Tea Party people were angry.  The President himself, while campaigning, said people clung to guns and religion.  They're just so full of hatred and vitriol on the left.  Not everyone, but there is a tangible hatred on the left for anyone who has different values.  It's not always violent but it's always bad to be so full of hatred.  And many on the left, really are full of anger, and it isn't that much of a stretch from there to full on hatred.  Don't believe me?

Quick thoughts on recent events

Being busy has kept me from blogging as much as I would like lately. But being on the subway gives me an opportunity to do some mobile blogging. Not that the subway has WiFi. That would be just a little too convenient. In any case, a lot has happened this week while I have been out of contact with my blog.

The expected winners in the Washington primaries offered no big surprise but they did accomplish one thing. They confirmed that the polling seemed reasonably accurate. That's good news for the GOP for the fall as polling is indicating big gains for them and with less than 90 days to go, no sudden trend reversals.

President Obama managed to step, no stumble into the Ground Zero Mosque. It apparently provided fodder for the likes of Harry Reid to go against the President thereby 'cementing' their independent bona fides. Yeah. I don't think that's going to turn the tide - people can see through that. There's no vote involved and no direct implication for anyone outside of NYC. It's easy to say you differ from the President on this one Harry (and anyone else who supported everything the President pushed) but we know how you voted when it really mattered.

Earlier today I called Harry Reid's comments on Hispanic voters not being Republican racist.  Harry Reid himself, remember has a questionable track record on viewing things through a racist prism.  Remember these comments about Obama?

Let's Not Byrd Stevens

Former Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens died in a plane crash yesterday.  Death is a sad thing and my sympathies are with his family.  But let's not Byrd Stevens.  Remember when Senator Robert Byrd died, how the Democrats cleansed him of everything he did wrong as explainable? No?  Here's an example;



Ted Stevens served his country and his state. But he made mistakes. Let's not compound that by making the same mistake Democrats made with Senator Byrd. Ted Stevens should not be lionized because he has died, just as Byrd should not have been. Don't forget, Stevens had corruption issues.  To overlook them politically, would be the same as that for which we are condemning Democrats.  I'm not saying Stevens did nothing good, or that he doesn't deserve some respect for his contributions over a lifetime.  I'm not saying his family doesn't deserve our sympathies.  What I'm saying is he doesn't deserve a whitewashing of his record like Robert Byrd received.  Byrd didn't deserve a pass either.  The difference of course is that the press, who mostly took a flyer on pointing out the whitewashing on Byrd's record will likely be more than willing to point out the sins of Stevens.

See how easy it is to throw out invectives?  Liberals do it all the time.  If you are a conservative you are apparently fair game.  But liberals are quite often usually more guilty of racism than conservatives. The problem is that there are different kinds of racism, and when it's politically correct, the media doesn't take the offender to task.  Politically correct, meaning liberal.  That doesn't mean it doesn't exist on a significant scale. In Harry Reid's case though, where there's smoke, there's fire.

No, you can't have the keys back.

Is it just me or did President Obama make that statement sounding more like the teenager who just crashed the car into a tree than the parent scolding the teenager for driving recklessly?

"Yeah, I swerved off the interstate and flew over a ditch and hit a tree, so what? I'm an adult now and you can't make me give you the keys back! I don't want to give 'em back!"

Petulant.

Guess what, they are going to be taken back anyway, because the American people aren't asking for them, they are demanding them. He's saying the Republicans can't have them back, but in a two party system, the Republicans ARE the repudiation of Obama-ism. They ARE the voice of those demanding the keys back.

The Question I'm Waiting For President Obama To Ask

I'm looking forward to hearing about this matter from a press that is ever so inquisitive of the President. Which matter is that?

Well as most people are well aware, the President recently stated that 'at some point you've made enough money'. I guess it's no longer above his pay grade to decide that sort of thing.

In any case, at what point does Barack say to Michelle, "at some point you've spent enough money", in relation to her extravagant Spanish vacation? And then upon further reflection, maybe he could ask himself, "have I spent enough of America's money?"

Yeah, it's a pipe dream, but since Americans are already asking him that question, maybe he will clue in at some point just by osmosis.

Genius? Yes.  Evil? No.
Go take a look at Andrew Breitbart's Twitter account.  The background (currently at least) is very telling.  Andrew Breitbart helped back the breaking of the ACORN scandal and also was involved in the Shirley Sherrod 'scandal' where it appeared he came off as manipulative. At least on the surface.  But both the ACORN scandal and the Sherrod scandal had some method to their madness.

ARRA Stimulus Failure

[NOTE: I'm only posting today quick posts as a result of my schedule, more detailed posts are sure to return at some point.]

$787 billion buys you not much of a recovery.  Let's get that into the history books.  In fact let's put it in there that that level of stimulus as a percentage of GDP, as put forward in the details of the ARRA will net you an unemployment rate 2 percentage points higher than promised, a quarter or two if GDP spike and then a drop off to tepid GDP growth after the money fades, and perhaps even a double dip recession (it remains to be seen).

Mortgage Forgiveness Horror

Ed Morrissey has a piece at Hot Air today about an Obama August surprise:


Rumors abound about how the government is going to force Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to forgive mortgage principal of underwater mortgages to the tune of $800 billion. That is indeed a horror on so many levels I don't even know where to begin.

Unemployment Unexpectedly Flat

Well, I was wrong. I thought the unemployment rate would tick up to 9.6% but it stayed flat at 9.5%. Not surprisingly, the station I was listening to stated the U.S. economy 'unexpectedly lost' jobs. In the 100,000+ range - I didn't catch the actual number.

It didn't move the unemployment rate but it sure doesn't seem like a recovery is under way. Not a robust recovery like Reagan provided. Calling it tepid would be being generous.

It makes you wonder about that stimulus that never worked. $787 billion and then an omnibus bill for over $400 billion. What did that money buy America besides more debt? It has to be the single biggest swindle in the history of the world. Theft on a monumental scale.

Quick hit observations

Some quick observations this morning.

-When the unemployment rate for July is announced later this morning, I EXPECT an increase in the unemployment rate. Don't let them continue to clobber you with the unexpectedly adjective. If every increase had been that unexpected, we should fire the economists for repeated incompetence.

-RIM has been hit in Saudi Arabia with a ban on its messaging and other applications due to 'security concerns'. People can send messages without government being able to track it. So? How about banning burkas so people can't smuggle explosives? This is either political power concentration, economic protectionism or part of a local hysteria that has swept other countries in the Middle East. Perhaps all three.

-Is all that oil in the Gulf gone? Was Tony Hayward of BP right that it is a drop in the bucket? Or is it still a disaster and just hustled off the front pages to protect President Obama? Perhaps a bit of both.

The GOP's dilemna - ambition versus caution.

I'm of two minds when it comes to both the 2010 mid-term elections and the 2012 Presidential elections, assuming both resolve successfully for the GOP. There's some lessons to be learned from President Obama's run as President as well as his 2008 election campaign. I will be posting more on that in the next few days. But one thing that deserves mentioning immediately is where does the GOP go after big wins? Everyone conservative wants Obamacare repealed. Most want something done about the debt.  And then there's jobs and a stalled economy recovery to deal with.

Democrats roll out their tired Greatest Hits package for the election

Over at National Review, Jim Geraghty has a piece today about how you should expect a lot of talk about health care between now and the November mid-term elections. The stunning thing from through the goggles of a 2008 perspective, is that nearly none of that chatter will originate from the Democrats. While it may be their signature piece of legislation - narrowly beating out that crack cocaine fix - they sure are busy trying to bamboozle the voters (to borrow an Obama catch phrase) into looking elsewhere.

Now that the voters of Missouri have overwhelmingly (71%) endorsed Proposition C on their primary election ballot, is Obamacare over?  No.  But this is merely an opening salvo in the war on ever more intrusive government.

But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

Harry Reid out the back door

In case you missed it, Harry Reid is being sneaky on his back door exit on the offshore drilling vote that was expected to pass easily in the Senate as a result of the Gulf oil spill.

GM is lying to us

I'm not bashing GM because it's Obama's toy now.  Okay, maybe I am.  But that's beside the point.

Now go to the GM website in Canada;

43 mpg highway (30 mpg city, and 34 mpg combined).

Why are the numbers different in Canada than the U.S.? Is GM lying to us?  Are Malibu vehicles more fuel efficient in Canada? Am I simply overlooking something obvious? Just asking.

It doesn't really matter - I'll probably end up buying a Ford - they don't need bailouts to stay afloat.  There's something reassuring about that.

For a White House in permanent campaign mode, nothing that is said can be done without assessing the impact of the comments on polling and voter enthusiasm.  While the Obama administration seems to be in perma-campaign mode (really), when Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner makes comments about a tough economy, they are not empathizing with Americans - they are lowering expectations among voters so that come election time, anything better than dismal, will hopefully play for them as a success.

Gallup's opinions on illegal immigration?

Gallup polls tend to get my attention less than Rasmussen polls because they don't focus on likely voters.  But those polls are better for gauging the mood of the country as a whole.  In any case, I never much looked beyond the polling from Gallup because of that fact.  That is until this post on Gallup caught my eye.

The Dictator Watch hasn't been my focus of late, since President Obama's domestic agenda has overshadowed his foreign relations shortcomings.  Some things cannot be ignored however.

Pete Stark - arrogant tool.

More Pete Stark, California Democrat, and arrogant tool. Californians take note - while you are busy trying to boot Pelosi out of her Chair, don't forget to 'rain' on Pete Stark. This guy needs to go, or at a minimum, be cast into the light of day for people to see who he really is.

When you think a certain way, it is not confined to one instance.  Consider as evidence California Democrat Pete Stark on federal power.



Get left behind you arrogant, foolish man. It gets worse - he mocks and condescends on anti-illegal-immigration questions.



Unscripted means the truth can come out.  President Obama's spread the wealth comment and Pete Stark's comments show that getting Democrats to talk will reveal for the camera, their true views.

Remember that for the mid-terms.  Ask questions, record conversations, post results.  It's a recipe for electoral success.
